Mechwarrior Mod: Custom 'Mechs
Date
Circa 2005
Role
3d Model Artist
One of the first games I ever modded was Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries. I created 3d models and matching textures for several Battlemechs - the Stiletto, Pack Hunter, Jenner IIC-1 and Jenner IIC-2. These were based on existing designs found in technical readouts that exist in lore.
I only did the models and textures, I didn't insert them into the game myself. That work was done by the rest of the Netbattletech Hardcore team. Netbattletech Hardcore was a community mod and league that was popular back around 2005. The models found their way into NetMech IV a few years later.
The models have around 2500-3000 polygons, which was a reasonable limit for a game that was made in the early 2000s. The textures are 512x512 if I recall correctly, and they have a transparency layer that allows them to work with any camouflage texture. I didn't create any of the camouflage textures or unit decals, but if you look through the images you can see the same 'mech in different paint schemes and that will give you an idea how it works.
If you own a copy of Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries and you are feeling ambitious, it may still be possible to download Netmech IV from somewhere on the internet. Otherwise, just enjoy these screenshots.
